Most SEO gurus mean well, but they are teaching you tactics that work to a degree, but they are still giving bad advice.
Hi everyone, I’m Pete Skuse, the ‘SEO Guy’ from Plymouth SEO Services and in this post I’m going to explain why the SEO gurus are lying to you.
Look, most SEO gurus give you tactical advice instead of strategical, long-term execution on what works best to get your website on page 1 of Google.
By itself, each tactic may help you, but it can only take you so far.
If you look at the biggest companies that dominate any niche, they don’t dominate it because they focus on SEO, they dominate because they’ve built a good product or service.
Google wants to show you what’s best for their users, right?
Just think about what you do when you’re online. Whenever you do a search on Google, are you like,
“Wow, I can see why this site should be the number one result, as they have a million backlinks.”
No, of course you don’t. Let’s be straight with each other here. You do a search on Google and you click on a listing because you think it’s the most relevant and it can help you out.
If it doesn’t, you click the back button and look for something that does. It doesn’t matter if they have the best on-page SEO, the most backlinks, stunning website design etc.
You only care about one thing: Did it give me what I was looking for?
And you’ll keep clicking on the different search results until you find what you are looking for.
And if enough people click on say the sixth search result because it solves their problem the best, then Google will rank it higher, no matter how many backlinks it has.
So, the tactics that you’re learning from SEO gurus aren’t wrong exactly, as they will help with your rankings and traffic, but if you want to build your business online properly, there are a few things you need to know:
#1 – You must focus on your product or service. Is your product or service the best it can be? So great that people want to keep using it again and again?
#2 – You need to build a brand. More people search for the keyword ‘Nike’ online than they do for ‘trainers’.
Nike creates a lot of other products besides trainers like shorts, socks, rucksacks etc., but when people think of Nike, they think of trainers.
All because they built a brand.
And Google’s looking at brand queries and is more likely to rank them higher because people have an affinity towards that brand.
If you do a search online for ‘trainers’ and you see something from Nike and something from PetesTrainers.com, you’re probably going to go for Nike because of their brand.
So focus on creating an amazing service and building a strong brand.
And the way you focus on building a strong brand is by using lots of different marketing channels like SEO, blogging, paid ads, offline ads etc.
#3 – If you want to do well in the long run, you must keep experimenting. Just because any Guru tells you something, it doesn’t mean that advice is going to hold true forever.
What works today may not work tomorrow, so you need to constantly keep testing and tweaking if you want to get your website on page 1 of Google and keep it there.
And even if you find something that wins now, it may not keep you winning next year or even next month, so you got to keep building your brand.
As Local SEO specialists, for example, we are always testing different SEO processes for our clients to see what is working the best, as factors are always changing, and you must do the same thing in your industry.
If you follow those three things, you’re going to do better in the long run.
Give me a shout if you have any questions about your online marketing strategy and book a free SEO audit to discover if your website is sending all the right signals to Google.
But keep in mind, once you make changes, you may not get the results you are looking for immediately.
When it comes to Search Engine Optimisation, for example, it takes a few months to build enough trust and authority with Google for them to move you up their search results, but when over 90% of people will use one of the businesses listed at the top of page 1 of Google, you can see that it is worth it.
So just make sure you’re patient and you’ll reap the rewards.
